A stunning collection of the visual imagery inspired by El Día de los MuertosA potent manifestation of Latino subculture in the U.S. as well as in Mexico, Day of the Dead art is hugely influential on the tattoo and kustom scenes. This collection emphasizes contemporary graphics, where traditional folk art and current U.S. politics and culture collide—Mexican traditions are mixed with Hollywood hip, or the graphic tags of L.A.’s Latino gangs. I am an art teacher and every year I do a unit on the Day of the Dead with my students. I have always had a hard time finding quality reproductions of Dia de los Muertos artwork, so when I found this book I was pretty stoked. The book is mainly artwork but includes a bit of historical background on the cultural aspects of the holiday. I wish that it featured a bit more traditional folk art, but my students love the contemporary style of the book (as do I!). I use this book in my high school art room, but it is not “school appropriate” in its entirety.
Its a great resource for me and I have really enjoyed the book!
